What is the difference between solar thermal panels and solar photovoltaic panels?

Photovoltaic panels generate electricity that can be used anywhere in the home for any purpose directly from sunlight. Solar thermal panels use the suns energy to heat water.

What is solar pv?

PV stands for Photovoltaic. These Voltaic cells are made up of thin layers of semi-conducting material (usually crystalline silicon) which generate an electrical charge when exposed to direct light .These are normally seen mounted on roofs as a renewable energy system. Panels can also be ground mounted.

How much can I expect to save on my energy bills by installing a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels on my roof?

Using a solar PV system can reduce considerably the amount of energy purchased from your energy provider. The amount saved will depend on a number of factors including the quantity and type of panels and present usage patterns. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that in the UK average savings stand at £230 per year from utilising the sun's energy through PV.

Will I be eligible for the Feed In Tariff (FIT)?

So long as you use MCS installers and MCS approved equipment for your installations then you are eligible.

What does a solar PV system cost?

Solar systems are designed to take into consideration your needs and budget. Because of these and other variables it isn't possible to state the cost of a system. However, we would be happy to offer you a no obligation solar survey to discuss your requirements in detail and to enable us to design a system to suit your present requirements.

How much will I save, how quickly will a system pay for itself?

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that in the UK average savings stand at £230 per year from utilising the sun's energy through a solar PV system .Payback time will vary depending on the size of the system, orientation of the panels and any shading issues that may impact on performance.

How much carbon dioxide will a solar PV system save?

A typical 2 kWp system will save almost 1000 kg of CO2 per year based on official Government estimates.

Does a solar PV system affect the resale value of my property?

Research in the States indicates that money spent on solar panel installation is recoverable and may actually increase the value of the home beyond the amount spent.

Do I need to apply for planning permission before I install a PV system?

Domestic properties do not generally require planning permission unless your home is listed in a Conservation area, World Heritage Site, or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).You should always contact the planning department of your local authority for clarification before proceeding.

I think my roof is in need of repair as is in poor condition - What should i do?

A roof mounted Solar Array will increase the load on your roof and we would therefore recommend that you undertake a structural survey. Should your roof need repair, combining this work with your solar panel installation will reduce the overall cost of the solar installation.

What happens if the solar panels are covered by snow?

Some sunlight will penetrate the snow, causing the panels to warm and eventually melt the snow. The chances are that during this process you will still be producing electricity!

How strong are the solar panels ?

Solar panels are built using tempered glass for durability and safety and are designed to withstand hail and high winds. They are also very securely mounted to the roof area minimising any risks.

How long does it take to install a PV system?

A domestic roof installation can be completed in 2-4 days dependant on the size of the system.

Are there any grants available?

The low carbon buildings program closed it grants scheme with the introduction of the Feed in Tariff.  However, grants may be available from your local authority, please contact them for details.

Will the system still produce electricity when it is cloudy?

Solar Photovoltaic systems use light to produce electrical energy so the modules still work when it is cloudy. They will however produce less than they would in sunny conditions. Cool bright conditions are optimal as panels produce more electricity when cool.

What Is an Inverter?

An inverter converts the DC voltage produced by the panels into AC mains voltage so that it can be used in your property.

What guaranties will I get on the system?

Please check your quotation for specific details. Panels generally have an output guarantee of between 20 and 25 years depending on manufacturer.  Inverters normally have a guarantee of 5 years.
